Hagupit ni Ondoy

Typhoon Ondoy took the capital of the Philippines by surprise; it flooded most of Metro Manila, no one was spared, the rich and the poor alike felt the the power of nature, everyone was wet, some died, and the rest of the country felt as if they were slapped on the face with the cold reality of nature's wrath. Here are the sad images of Metro Manila after Typhoon Ondoy had its fill.

We're fortunate enough to have not experienced the typhoon, all we got was the mild rain. We are living in a place where typhoons could not happen, Cebu City. But we have relatives in Metro Manila, my siblings are in Metro Manila. We are really worried because we could not communicate with them because phone service are not available in their area right now.

Information Technology Bill Being Push

I saw this post in DepED Region site but I'll just post this here just to spread the news...

The Philippine Technology Act of 2009 is a new bill created by Mar Roxas to serve as blue print in the government investment in IT and R&D.

He said there is a need to push the country's IT's and R&D capacity in mastering latest technology and scientific innovation is the key to Philippines economic progress. He proposed that IT projects and new innovations should be made public and accessible for faster commercialization.

We should recall that the US military already have the internet for their intelligence purposes way back cold war days. When they open the technology in public commercialization through the help of US Senator and former VP, the Information Superhighway became unstoppable to max that it benefited most Philippines call center as well as call center in India and Mexico for spanish market together with less fortunate European countries. One Internet technology Guru said the IT innovation is alarming that there is always arena for development in which government may not capable to control specially like those under develop countries as we are.

This Technology Transfer Act of 2009 will helps the distribution and commercialization of intellectual property and technology researched funded by the government for the purpose of economic growth through information technology where Philippines outsourcing companies and local IT companies are expected to enjoy the benefits.

The DepED family specially the pupils, students and its teachers will be the most benefited of any improvement of technology. As of now, there is no research on the prevalence of ICT integration in the school. How many schools are implementing integration and how many teachers per school are capable of ICT integration in their classes. While PowerPoint presentation and Internet are the best tools for the subject like Araling Panlipunan and Technology and Livelihood Education, I have seen teachers not optimizing the used of these technologies. Some said they lack of computers even the computers are there even it is 1:4 ratio, it is still functional to the lesson. What is see in this issue in my 5 years as ICT Trainor is the knowledge and skills of teacher to integrate the lesson with ICT and not just leaving the computer inside the classroom giving more traffics to youtube, facebook, friendster and many more.

Virtual Sanity

Add as contact? It is the question that everyone seems to be answering nowadays. And the question is always met with excitement or nostalgia as one relishes the thought of connecting with a funny friend or a sweet classmate from way, way back.

It was apprehension for me though 2 years ago, when a student asked to a friend in my Yahoo Messenger. At first, it was the worry that my privacy will be invaded and worry at the thought that my very inquisitive students would hound me with their questions as long as I’m online. Then again, I thought it was cool to have a students as a contact. Little did I know, that single click would make me begin to see what it means to be a teacher in the virtual age.

Now, when one views my Multiply or Facebook page, its almost always my students who react to anything I post. It’s the cool guy in class who I compete with in Typing Maniac. It’s the reserved students who have the best houses in pet society. It’s my students who have the best five star in restaurant city. My students have even made my co teachers to represent one facet of a personality in their self made personality quiz, ” Which faculty member are you?” Happily, there were nothing negative in their description of their ideal teachers and it was very interesting to see the different pictures of a teacher they see in each one of their mentors.

At its most shallow level, through the Internet, specifically, the social networking websites, teachers have become friends to their students and vice versa, as they try to outdo each other in the various games in the Internet. From experience though, I can say that the cooler the game, the harder it is to beat my students.

The teacher has also become a person of interest outside the classroom. They are no longer the talking one dimensional beings in front of a green backdrop. Through their YM, Multiply or Facebook stats, students have since begun to understand their teachers as people with anxieties, rants, weird hobbies and shallow pleasures.

As a teacher though, the best thing about connecting with students through the Internetis the opportunity to see their potential. It’s a great joy to see my students blogs filled with essays that will never ne graded. It is here where I get to see what my students’ lives are as they try to fuse their family, lovelife adn barkada with the schoolwork and academic requirements I give them, and somehow draw meaning from all of these.

And so Jamiroquai was wrong. Technology humanizes. Even more surprisingly, it has done so in the conservative world of education. Well, I’m sure he was not all wrong. An immature teacher who refuses to recognize that there must still be some sort of a divide between teachers and students will be a headache to school administrators. Fortunately, my experience inmy school has generally been positive, the best thing being students and teachers are no longer boxed into this and that.

With technology, teachers are no longer the center of knowledge. And yes, while information has been wildly scattered in the world wide Web, what my experience has taught me is that despite this madness, students and teachers have used technology to make sense of this virtual sanity.
